Based on the readings from this week I came up with a
question that can raise a lot of different opinions.
Do you think its more important/beneficial to attend a
university that offers liberal arts education or attend a university that only
focuses on your major?
Personally I think it would be
better to attend a college like Southern, which has a liberal arts education. I
like the idea of this because it pushes you to look into classes you wouldn’t
think you’d ever have interest in. For example, I’m taking a media course this
semester and I happen to really like it. If I didn’t get the chance to take
classes I haven’t heard of before I wouldn’t of known this class would’ve
interested me. Being an undecided major it’s really beneficial to take a lot of
different courses to see what I like and don’t like.
What I like most is how liberal
arts education focuses a lot on critical thinking. I like going in depth with
my thinking because I learn a lot more that way. By going deeper in my thinking
it’s allowing me to connect my knowledge with other topics helping me get a
better understanding. Overall it makes you a better-rounded individual so that
you know things from every subject. You may not be a master in the subject but
you at least have some knowledge that you’re able to have discussions without
being completely clueless.
Going to a university where you
just focus on your major can be good as well, but you don’t get the same
experiences. By focusing on one topic you don’t have the ability to explore new
topics. You only know the basics and don’t get the same experience. I can see
how some people may think its good to focus on one thing that way you can work
towards mastering it. But you’re life isn’t always going to revolve around one
thing, which is why its important to learn about multiple things. I believe
getting a liberal arts education is more beneficial because it expands your
critical thinking, writing, and communication skills, which are all necessities
to getting further in life.
