1V Inquiry

I would define inquiry as broadening your knowledge by asking questions. It’s an important word to know because it has to do with this class. One of the things we do in this class is listen to other people’s ideas when they talk, hold discussions, and learn from each other. Another word I’ve been looking at this week is “symbol” which we use in my Media and Everyday Life course. Symbol is a word, image, gesture, or sound that stands for (represents) a physical object, an idea, or a feeling. The vocab word symbol is used in this course because we are talking about advertising and what some companies do to attract more people. In my geography and conflict class I have learned the term social order, which is maintained through domination by those with the greatest access to resources. Inequality exists because those in control actively defend their advantages. This term relates to my class because we are beginning to read a book titled A Different Mirror, which will cover this word and other topics.

1I A Place to Focus

There are a lot of places to go on campus to study. I’ve only been here for a week and one place I found to be very good to focus and get my work done is the library. I’ve been there a few times this week and each time there was people but I was always able to find somewhere to sit and be alone. It’s great because its quiet and it has everything you need (books, computers, printers, etc.). I like going to the library especially when my roommate is in my dorm at the time because I can focus better and get my work done quicker. The library is located right across from Conn Hall.

1B Thoughts on Other Blogs and Ideas for Mine

The three blogs I looked at which were Tagan’s Kitchen, Productive Flourishing and Rebecca’s Pocket are each very different from each other. A lot of the blogs on Tagan’s Kitchen were talking about different foods they have tried and they would then leave the recipe for people to look at and talk about what they liked about it. Where as when I looked at blogs on Productive Flourishing I read a lot about being successful, time management, etc. On one blog I read Why I Was So Worked Up About Killing My Newsletter I noticed it was very different than the blogs from the other site. He had focused more on what he had done that day and explained it all in his blog. He talks about what he did to do his newsletter and his thought process while doing it. Rebeccas Pocket is also a very different blog than the rest. She likes to blog much more, and she basically blogs her day, things that interest her, and anything that’s on her mind. I actually like her blogs the most because she updates a lot and even though some of it has to do with her and not more important topics she does post some interesting things and links. I think the second site I looked at which was productive flourishing could have explained more in his blog, he explained the basics but I think it might have been interesting to read more. After looking at these blogs I would like to take ideas from each of these sites. For example, how Tagan’s Kitchen had showed the recipes I want to do something similar like post links to what I’m talking about to make my blog more interesting. I also want some of my blogs to be like the ones on Productive Flourishing, which had basic details but didn’t give too much to lose the readers focus. And lastly I really like Rebeccas Pocket because she gives lot of detail in her blogs and keeps them updated. To keep my blog interesting for my readers I think it will help if I explain things in detail so people get a better understanding of what I'm saying.

1A What is College

College is where you can get a broader understanding of what you want to be when you get older, its a place to increase your knowledge. Being a college student means that you want to get a good education to eventually get a career. Where you end up after college depends on your major and what you want to be. For example, if you want to go into nursing you have to take specific courses for that major and that will then guide you to the right job. In my case since I'm undecided I am taking basic classes and joining clubs to keep all options open which will hopefully help me find what major is right for me. To me everything I do here determines where I end up after college so I think its very important to focus on the academic aspect first. Its also important to be social and get to know people because you want the full college experience. It also helps to know people because you can always go to them for help if you need it. I have a lot of goals this year. I want to work on time management and my studying skills the most. I think it may taKe awhile for me to find a good schedule to do my work and overall finding something I am comfortable with. I expect my classes to be helpful, meaning we review the basics in class that way when I'm working outside of class I don't get stuck and I know what to do. I also expect the schedule of the class to stay the same meaning some what of the same structure every week. Some of my first impressions would be that it's very different from high school. You have to do most of your work outside of class rather than in class which will definitely be a challenge to get used to. Since there is little class time I think it's important to use office hours and visit professors often. I think it's important to get to know them so they have a better understanding on how to help you. All in all after attending welcome weekend and orientation college seems to be just what I expected.
